Holiday Specials 2013

Dec.1 at 6pm – Hanukkah Lights 2013
A perennial NPR favorite, Hanukkah Lights features Hanukkah stories and memoirs written by acclaimed authors expressly for the show, as read by NPR’s Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz.

Dec. 1 at 7pm – Candles Burning Brightly
A one-hour celebration of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, with an exploration of Chanukah foods, traditional activities and plenty of music, and featuring a special reading by cultural treasure Theodore Bikel of The Lost Menorah.

Dec. 8 at 7pm – Advent Voices
A one hour special of contemplative music for the season, hosted by Lynne Warfel.

Dec. 13 at 8pm - Miracle on 34th Street Radio Drama
Broadcast live from Sursa Performance Hall at Ball State University. IPR presents an original radio drama, complete with authentic sound effects (not digitized) and orchestra. 

Dec. 15 at 7pm – Welcome Christmas! 
This year’s program puts the focus on old French carols, alongside two world premieres in the annual VocalEssence/American Composers Forum Christmas carol contest.

Dec. 18 8pm – Leroy Anderson Christmas
Celebrate the holidays with the music of Leroy Anderson, including classic Christmas arrangements and original music including his famous holiday composition, Sleigh Ride.

Dec. 19 at 8pm – A Chanticleer Christmas
The 12-man San Francisco vocal ensemble brings their special seasonal glee to traditional carols and newer works.

Dec. 20 at 8pm – Christmas with Morehouse and Spelman Glee Clubs
The choirs of Morehouse and Spelman Colleges present a joyous celebration of the schools’ tradition of singing excellence, with their trademark mixture of spirituals and carols.

Dec. 21 at 9pm – Winter Solstice Celebration with Paul Winter Consort
A holiday celebration on a spectacular scale — music, dance and renewal of spirit at the great turning point of the year.

Dec. 22 at 11am – Tinsel Tales: NPR Christmas Favorites
This program features stories from the NPR archives that touch on the meaning of Christmas. David Sedaris, Bailey White, John Henry Faulk — these and other NPR voices, past and present.

Dec. 22 at 7pm – A Chanticleer Christmas
The 12-man San Francisco vocal ensemble brings their special seasonal glee to traditional carols and newer works.

Dec. 22 at 6pm – Jonathan Winters’  ‘A Christmas Carol
A public radio tradition hosted by NPR’s Susan Stamberg. Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Dickens’ holiday classic, with a special performing edition prepared by Dickens.

Dec. 23 at 8pm – Welcome Christmas!

Dec. 24 at 10am – A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
The annual Christmas Eve favorite, broadcast live from the chapel of King’s College in Cambridge, England.

Dec. 24 at 8pm - St. Olaf Christmas Festival
One of the nation’s most cherished holiday celebrations originates at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. More than 500 talented students perform hymns, carols and choral works.

Dec. 24 at 10pm – Christmas Music All Through the Night
Beethoven Satellite Network’s Peter Van de Graaff hosts this special presentation of music for Christmas Eve.

Dec.25 at 7 am – Christmas Music from the IPR Library
Morning Musicale’s host Steven Turpin presents this offering of musical selections for Christmas Day.

Dec.29 at 7pm – Echoes of Christmas with the Dale Warland Singers
Celebrate the holiday with the finest moments in the rich Dale Warland Singers’ Christmas tradition — vocal gems that bring joy to the holidays.

Jan. 1 at 11am – New Year’s Day from Vienna 2014
The Vienna Philharmonic presents its ever popular annual New Year’s Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. You’ll hear your favorite waltzes, polkas and more — a festive way to start off the New Year.
