Indiana Senate amends abortion bill

by Indiana Public Broadcasting

January 31, 2012

A Senate bill establishing protocols doctors must follow when administering medical abortions is now limited to doctors in abortion clinics.   Oldenburg Republican Jean Leising is responsible for the amendment.  She says when abortion drugs are used outside of abortion facilities, they’re usually for procedures other than elective abortions… like treating an ectopic pregnancy.    But Senate minority leader Vi Simpson says the amendment reveals the author’s motives for the bill – discrimination towards Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers in the state.  Bill author Markle Republican Travis Holdman offered another amendment that removed the requirement that drugs be given based on FDA protocol.   His amendment allows doctors to use the protocol they feel is the best practice.
